Four Parts, One Plugin
Xpand!2 is multitimbral, and that is the whole point. Every instance gives you four independent parts (A, B, C and D), each with its own patch, its own volume, pan and tuning, its own arpeggiator and its own effect sends. Stack them and you get a layered composite instrument out of a single plugin slot. Split them across MIDI channels instead and one window covers bass, keys, pad and lead.
That architecture is why Xpand!2 punches above its price. A patch you like becomes a starting point rather than a finished sound - detune part B, drop part C an octave, arpeggiate part D, and you have something nobody else has.

The library runs to over 2,500 presets covering acoustic and electric keyboards, basses, guitars, drums and percussion, brass, strings, woodwinds, choirs, organs, synth leads, pads, world instruments and sound effects. They are sorted into sensible categories, which sounds mundane until you have spent twenty minutes scrolling a badly tagged library hunting for a Rhodes.
Under the hood the sounds come from a mix of engines - sample playback, FM, virtual analog and tonewheel modeling - so the collection has genuine variety instead of one synth wearing different hats.
Smart Knobs: Editing Without a Manual
Every patch exposes a handful of Smart Knobs - macro controls AIR has already mapped to whatever matters most for that particular sound. On a pad it might be filter and shimmer; on a bass, drive and decay. Assign them to a MIDI controller and you are performing the sound instead of programming it. If you want to go deeper, the per-part pages open up envelopes, filters, modulation and the arpeggiator.
Effects Built In
Each part gets its own insert effect plus sends to two shared effect buses, drawn from a pool of reverbs, delays, choruses, flangers, phasers, distortions, EQs and compressors. In practice that means a patch arrives already sitting in a space, and you can shape it without loading a single extra plugin.
